Riverside Memorial Chapel, Leaders in Funeral Pre-Planning

For over 100 years, RIVERSIDE MEMORIAL CHAPELS has earned an outstanding reputation for providing dignified, compassionate service to families at their time of need.

Our air-conditioned handicapped accessible Chapel is homelike, and soothing with comfortable traditional decor.

A Jewish Funeral
At RIVERSIDE MEMORIAL CHAPELS our experienced staff offers reassuring guidance for those who are entrusted with making final arrangements and is an invaluable resource to those not familiar with Jewish burial customs. Taharah (purification) is provided by Chevra Kaddisha's (Holy Society), arrangements for Shmeerah (watching) are made at the families request, cotton or hand-sewn linen Tachrichim (burial garment) are always available. A large selection of Oron (caskets) are guaranteed free of metal and have been manufactured in a facility that does not operate on the Sabbath. K'vurah (burial) should be as expedient as possible. These all-important customs express the dignity and sanctity of a Jewish funeral. In keeping with Jewish tradition, RIVERSIDE MEMORIAL CHAPELS also provides its families with K'reeah ribbons, Yahrzeit Calendars, Shiva benches and Shiva Candles.

For those unaffiliated with a Synagogue, our Directors work closely with Orthodox, Conservative, Reform and Reconstructionest rabbis who conduct dignified Chapel and Graveside services that console the family and honor the deceased.

The Jewish Funeral Directors of America, Inc. (JFDA) is an international association of funeral homes who predominantly serve members of the Jewish faith. Organized in 1932, the JFDA is the oldest and largest organization of its kind whose members have been assisting people of the Jewish faith arrange meaningful and affordable funerals in the Jewish tradition.

The members of the JFDA adhere to a strict code of Ethics and Professional Standards. Recognizing that Jewish funeral service is a calling with great responsibilities, demanding high professional and service standards, fair and honorable dealing with all whom they are called to serve, the members of the JFDA conduct themselves and their establishments in keeping with the great traditions of their calling and of their faith.

What To Do If A Loved One Dies
When there has been a death and you call RIVERSIDE MEMORIAL CHAPELS, the Director will ask you where you are, your phone number and the name and location of the deceased. You will begin to give the Director any pertinent information, such as the location of the Cemetery, if a plot has been previously purchased. When do you want the funeral to take place? Do you want a Shomer (watcher)? Will a Taharah (traditional washing) be performed? Will the deceased be dressed in a shroud or their own clothes? Do you have a rabbi? Our Director will guide you. Information for the Death Certificate will need to be given to the Director. We realize that at this time it may be very difficult to focus on the importance of this information. The deceased's mother's maiden name hardly holds magnitude over the loss you are feeling. In addition, we will procure all necessary documents, including the Death Certificate.

Meeting With The Director
Commonly called "The Arrangement Conference" is a meeting with a Director at our chapel located in Manhattan, N.Y., or any of our affiliates throughout the country.

Before you even come in to meet with the Director for the Arrangement Conference, the staff is focused on carrying out your wishes. A Director is dispatched to bring your loved one into our care. If you requested a Shomer, he will be called. The Chevra Kaddisha is alerted if a Taharah has been requested (men for men, women for women). At least four members of the Chevra will coordinate their schedules in order to perform this intricate process of purification for your loved one. A staff member is making arrangements to pick up the Death Certificate. Phone calls are being made to the Cemetery. If you do not have Cemetery property our Director will provide helpful information and assistance.

At the beginning of the Arrangement Conference you will be given a copy of RIVERSIDE MEMORIAL CHAPEL'S General Price List, wherein every service or item we offer with its cost, is listed. The type of service you wish will be discussed. Chapel, Synagogue or Graveside services are usual options. A dignified selection of Caskets, Urns and Vaults are available for your inspection, and the RIVERSIDE MEMORIAL CHAPEL'S Casket Price List and Outer Interment Receptacle Price List is presented, describing the specifications and cost of each item.

We consider it very important for all to know that embalming, which is contrary to Jewish Law, is NOT required by law in New York State.
